Mystery of the oldest siva linga,Sri Parasurameswara Temple./ Gudimallam / Andhra Pradesh
Sometimes before i came across an interesting article when I was looking for the oldest Lord Shiva statue with full figure .. My detailed search led me to this interesting temple in Gudimallam village which is very close to Tirupathi and just 10KM from Renigunta railway station ... Though I visited Thirupathi before, I missed visiting this temple... This is an ASI protected "live" temple

This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and popularly known as "the Parasurameswara Temple." This contains a very early linga with a full-length figure of Shiva, housed in the garbha griha of the temple...This may be the second earliest linga associated with Shiva discovered so far and it has been dated to the 2nd/1st century BCE or the 3rd century BCE or much later...If assigned an early date, the figure on the linga is probably ""one of the earliest surviving and unequivocal images of the god Shiva"
The temple is much later than the linga and estimated to "the later Chola and Vijayanagara periods", so possibly a thousand years later than the sculpture !!!! The linga was originally sited in the open air, with the rectangular stone surrounding that still remains.... The temple still remains in worship....
The linga is carved out of a hard dark brown local stone. It is over 5 ft high and slightly above a foot in diameter on the main shaft. ...On the front portion of the linga the God is standing on the shoulders of the apasmarapurusha or a dwarf...
